Trumpet Vine Provides Your Garden a Better Charm

The name ‘trumpet vine’ is enough significant to express the meaning of the phrase. These are climbing vines that produce blossoms of different bright colors such as orange and yellow. The shape of the flowers resemble a trumpet bell. That is why they are called trumpet vines. These trumpet vines are from a particular botanical family scientifically named Bignoniaceae. The origin of trumpet vine lies in the sub-tropical areas. But they can grow in low-water areas as well. These qualities make them suitable for the gardens of dry climate and Mediterranean locale.

Trumpet vines can be used as landscaping bushes. The reason behind this is the type of flowers they produce. The blossoms of a trumpet vine are like loose screen. They are extremely bright and colorful and grow irregularly through summer till early fall. The leaves of the trumpet vine are similar in shape and they all have common texture more or less.

Types of Trumpet Vines and their Maintenance

They need to be trimmed from time to time. As an example we can talk about the growth of the Yellow Trumpet, which is native to the Americas. Tecoma stans, which is also known as Yellow Bells or Yellow Trumpetbush, needs to be trimmed once or twice annually. If this is maintained then their height can be kept between 3 to 4 meters. But if the annual trimming is neglected then the Yellow Trumpet can grow up to a tree like structure. Therefore for obtaining best results, timely shaping and pruning are necessary.

Cape Honeysuckle (a shrub native to Africa) forms a more vine like structure. So regular pruning is a must for this kind of trumpet vines in order to maintain a bushy form. However, excessive trimming and shaping may be harmful to the plant and your trumpet vine may lose its charm and its gorgeous orange blossoms.

There is another type of plant which is variously called as ‘Trumpet Creeper’. The scientific name of trumpet creeper is Campsis Radicans.  While discussing the trumpet vines I have mentioned that they can be used as informal hedges, but trumpet creeper can climb up and cover a wall. This is possible because it is a self-climbing vine. If you have never seen the glory of the reddish-orange blossoms of this creeper, you can not imagine the out of the world beauty of that. It is advised not to plant trumpet creeper just next your house because they are extremely aggressive and invasive. It is better to plant it on an unconnected wall which is not much close to the wall of your house. Trumpet Creepers are native to America and especially to the southeastern United States. It's best not to plant them anywhere around cultivated gardens as it may takeover the garden. You can use inground pots or barrels to control the growth to a certain extent.

While choosing a plant for your garden, you need to think about the overall appearance. If you feel that the trumpet vines are mandatory, and you'd like some advice, my suggestion is to go for the shrubs coming from the family of legume. In particular, I can name Senna corymbosa which goes well with trumpet vine because of its yellow flowers and the leaf shape and size are quite similar to that of the trumpet vines.

Other Types of Vines

Apart from the trumpet vine there are some other kinds of vines too. Among them the common favorites are:

Star Jasmine Vine
This wonderful looking vine is a vigorous climber and can climb as high as 40 feet. And to achieve this they usually hang by their roots. The foliage becomes a mixture of light and dark shade of green by the spring, while the lighter green portion signifies new growth. Soon, small and delicate white blossoms will cover the leaves. The flowers become star-shaped, hence the name - Star Jasmine.

Black Eyed Susan Vine
Black eyed Susan Vine is one of the most common types of vine. It has 10 to 20 yellow colored neutral rays surrounding the dark purple colored conical shaped flower. They can grow in sunny, dry places and in any kind of soil, even along the roadsides.

Cypress Vine
This type of vine produces many star—shaped blossoms of different colors and shapes. Its flowers also have sweet fragrant.
